How to quickly and effectively end a dog fight.
Lately, I have seen suggested videos on You tube where usually a big dog attacks a smaller dog. In groups, I read posts of people whose dog has been attacked by an unleashed dog asking what to do next time something like that happens. What surprises me is that in most cases, none of the people who are present know how to effectively and immediately end the fight, not even the owners of the dogs that started the fight.
We have talked about the use of break sticks but since you may not always have them with you or their use may be illegal where you live we will give some advice on how to react in case something like this happens to you and your dog. Whether your dog is the attacker or the attacked. What we do to break a dog fight is the same thing we do in case a dog attacks a human or a child and we need to help.
“ If a dog fight occurs, stay calm and act immediately”. You have already heard that, it is what everyone says it is what we have said in the past. But, let us be realistic. You will panic and lose it and it is normal. The important thing is to not let stress and panic take over. Panicked or not, do as we will advise you to do, to end the matter quickly and relatively safely.
( I will not comment on kicking, punching, water throwing and more I have seen over and over.)
For obvious reasons we will not accompany this post with video. Anyone who wants to see how quickly and effectively the incident ended and the attacking dog was withdrawn using the way we will describe, can do a quick research on You tube.
Now, let us suppose your dog was unexpectedly attacked by an unleashed dog. The attack was unexpected so you did not have the opportunity to either see it coming or do something to prevent it.
The attacking dog has your dog on a good bite and jerk. Your dog may not be able to react. Your dog may be too young or too old or attacked from behind and gotten by surprise, therefore unable to defend himself.
There are three ways to chose from , in order to intervene and end a dog fight fast and as safe as possible.
Choice 1:
This will only work in case the attacking dog wears a collar.
Step 1:Approach the attacking dog from behind, spread your legs and stand over the dog. You have the attacking dog between your legs.
Step 2:Grab the attacking dog by the collar.
Step 3:Lift the dog by the collar while twisting the collar. The dog will have difficulty breathing so he will release his bite in order to take a breath.
Step 4:Hold the dog as long as it takes for him to release his bite.
Step 5:When the dog releases his bite , do not let him go until somebody comes to put a leash on him or until he faints, so you have the time to safely walk away.
Choice 2
In case the attacking dog does not wear a collar, you can use a leash to achieve the results of the aforementioned first choice.
Step 1:Approach the attacking dog from behind, spread your legs and stand over the dog. You have the attacking dog between your legs.
Step 2:Hold one end of the leash in each hand and place it underneath the dog's neck. Put the end with the snap hook inside the handle loop on the other hand.
Step 3:Tighten the leash around the dog's neck. Pull the leash upwards ,as high as you can.
Choice 3
Step 1:Approach the attacking dog from behind, spread your legs and stand over the dog. You have the attacking dog between your legs.
Step 2:Do a headlock or a rare naked choke to the attacking dog. ( If you do not know how to do these, there are many videos available to watch on You tube. If you do not have any experience , carefully practice with a friend so it comes to you more easily if you ever need to use them.)
Step 3:Hold the dog as long as it takes for him to release his bite.
Step 4:When the dog releases his bite , do not let him go until somebody comes to put a leash on him or until he faints, so you have the time to safely walk away.
Tips:
If you are not strong enough to hold the dog, use your body weight to your advantage.
Firstly, we want the dog to stop the jerking; because the strong ,fast shaking increases the possibility of severe injury. Secondly, we want the dog to have difficulty breathing so he will release his bite.
All this may sound extreme to some of you and some of you may think “I would never treat a dog that way”. I understand. You have to understand that a dog fight is an extreme situation that can cause very serious injury or death. A dog attacking a child is an extreme situation and extreme situations require extreme measures. This is the truth whether we like it or not.
Personally , I prefer a thousand times to do something extreme and effective rather than be a witness of an extreme incident with a bad ending. If a dog I took out walking was attacked or if a child was attacked in my presence and all I did was stand there and watch how bad the situation will get in order to avoid using extreme measures, I would not be able to forgive myself.
Now, you know what to do. The choice is yours.
We wish you never find yourself in a situation like this.
PLEASE NOTE! If you are ever in an incident like the aforementioned , your actions are your responsibility. We bare no responsibility in the occasion of accident.
