Notes on protection training

In training a dog for Protection two basic rules apply :

1. You cannot stimulate aggressive behaviour to a dog that does not have the correct genotype

2. You cannot rely on genotype alone for a dog to show aggressive behaviour without proper training.

When you stimulate aggressive behaviour(for protection work)you rely on genetics and the proper concentrations of brain chemicals to encourage the dog to show aggression. If you do not start with a dog that has the correct genotype to show aggressive behaviour ,you are at severe disadvantage and should search for a dog with a better genotype.

In this work ,you also rely on the physical development of the dogs neural pathways in the brain, which only comes about through proper socialization ,or imprinting, where the puppy was pleasantly introduced to everything about the decoy and aggression and learned that this kind of training is normal.

If the puppy does not recognize work with a decoy as normal ,you are again in severe disadvantage. In some cases a dog that was not exposed to decoys and aggression work as a puppy may not ever become comfortable with it. When genetics encourages the dog to exhibit a behaviour that feels rewarding =>dopamine released in the reward pathway =>his behaviour is reinforced and is likely to be repeated. If the behaviour results in a release of acetylcholine in to the punishment circuit, the dog will avoid engaging in that behaviour. Remember, there are no mysterious drives accumulating units of energy that must be released and therefore forcing the dog into certain behaviours .Behaviours(including aggression) result from genetic predispositions that are either reinforced or punished. It's all about DNA, brain development, and brain chemistry.

Contrary to what is commonly believed well-trained attack dogs are socialized, loyal, and unerringly obedient. They will not attack unless their owners are facing a threat or have commanded an attack. Some breeds are better than others when it comes to this type of training, since it requires strength, calmness, loyalty, a love for humans, and a highly developed intelligence.

P.S Criminals interviewed state the last thing they want to come up against is a trained dog. "Si vis pacem, para bellum" meaning "If you wish for peace, prepare for war."
